Questions from Another Sister
I’m writing on my new blog every day for thirty days straight. This is the fourteenth one.I asked my family and friends for questions about my career that I could answer during these thirty days. Today I’m answering a fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh.
Today I answer some questions from my sister Debbie. She’s married to the aforementioned brother-in-law Neil. They live in Austin with four kids, one’s my goddaughter - what’s up Sophia?! My favorite memory about Debbie involves the aforementioned brother-in-law Neil and the aforementioned infamous day in 1998 where I burnt my arm. I remember one person very clearly when I burnt my arm - Debbie. She immediately ran to me. She immediately ran me to a bathtub to put my arm in cold water. She sat with me as she took care of me, and I felt safe. After that day, I always knew Debbie was going to be a good mom.Try to find the word aforementioned used three times in any other paragraph ever written. I dare you.
From the seester:Have you ever considered a career as a writer? What genre would you feel most comfortable writing in?Nope. I mean, I’ve thought about writing stuff, but never seriously considered it. I’ll leave the writing to my screenwriting friends here in the City of Angels, our Dad, and my friend Rob Hicks. Our Dad and my friend Rob Hicks both self-published their very first books within the last couple years. Our Dad wrote a non-fiction book on the Beatitudes (link), and my friend Rob Hicks wrote a fictional book that I can only describe as fantastic and can’t recommend highly enough. What meals do you like to eat on a budget?
There was a period back in 2012 and early 2013 where money was really tight. I bought this gigantic bag of split peas and a gigantic cardboard cylinder of oatmeal. I didn’t look up any recipes to make anything good with either of them. So I was alternating between eating this horrible oatmeal mush and eating a horrible split pea mush. I became adept at suppressing the gag reflex. So I can safely say that I don’t like to eat that stuff on a budget.
Nowadays:
- Budget breakfast? Steel-cut oatmeal, natural peanut butter, raisins, and almonds.
- Budget lunch? Cut veggies, hummus, banana peanut butter smoothie.
- Budget dinner? Sometimes I make a quinoa black bean salad, a lentil chili, or a three-bean salad. It’s amazing what I’ve learned to make with several cans of beans, a little oil, and some seasoning.
How is LA food different from Texas food? There are way more vegan, vegetarian, and other healthy options everywhere. Here are some small differences:
- Most tacos are served on corn tortillas, which is no bueno for this tex-mex loving Texan.
- Avocado is God.
- Garlic aioli is second God. (I discovered garlic aioli here, but I think most of America has garlic aioli now.)
Would you ever take a job as an actor in a slasher/horror film? Why?Absolutely I would. I think there are a lot of slasher and horror films that are a lot of fun. I’ve never had an affinity for scary movies, but I wouldn’t turn it down. My old acting teacher said that terror is one of the hardest emotions to act, so naturally, I'd love a shot.
11:48PM. Yes sir, another close call, but another blog post is posted. Tomorrow’s the halfway point. Body is weak, mind is willing.
